{"id":20757,"date":"2020-06-03T15:20:59","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T13:20:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/reflexions-sur-la-conservation-des-recifs-coralliens\/"},"modified":"2021-02-26T14:08:21","modified_gmt":"2021-02-26T13:08:21","slug":"thoughts-behind-coral-reef-conservation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/en\/thoughts-behind-coral-reef-conservation\/","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts behind coral reef conservation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><i>How can management monitoring help define the next step in conservation?\u00a0<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The measure of <\/span><b>management outcomes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in coral reefs is made by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/en\/coral-reef-management\/\">monitoring<\/a> key variables (<\/span><b>indicators<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), that can give the most information about the achievement of any given <\/span><b>goal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At the same time, this feedback gives information about what the most <\/span><b>resource-efficient<\/b> <b>conservation measures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are, in order to reach a large amount of goals with few resources (Harris et al, 2017). This is useful for prioritizing what to do next, where and how.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasingly, in order to sustain ecosystems and their services they provide to human communities, coral reefs\u2019 management is needed to consider <\/span><b>multiple goals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including both <\/span><b>biological<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>socio-economical components<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (N\u00f6rstrom et al, 2016).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>The importance of thresholds in conservation management\u00a0<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help understand how successful management is, it is important to define the <\/span><b>thresholds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for each of the <\/span><b>indicators<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will tell us how close the results are to what was expected or desired.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this sense, the use of reference conditions is very useful. In fact, <\/span><b>reference conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are defined as the <\/span><b>values of a \u201cmodel ecosystem\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that can be compared to the management results. These can be set as the conditions in absence of human pressure (Borja et al, 2012) or under acceptable resource exploitation (MacNeil, 2013). They act as the <\/span><b>direction for management measures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so they can be more or less ambitious, and this choice will change the interpretation of the outcomes (Cinner et al, 2020).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>What is the importance of context in achieving management goals for coral reef conservation?\u00a0<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When considering the management outcomes of several coral reef ecosystems on a <\/span><b>larger scale<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, besides the examination of the individual management measures, it is key to also consider the respective <\/span><b>surrounding conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, since they can influence the processes and achievements. For example, <\/span><b>biologically<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if the coral reef is surrounded by seagrass meadows, the seascape\u2019s heterogeneity may better sustain the richness of species and their abundance (Grober-Dunsmore et al, 2007).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, regarding the <\/span><b>human component<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one way to analyse human pressure in the seascape is through the <\/span><b>\u201cgravity\u201d metric<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Cinner et al, 2018). It mainly consists in measuring the interaction between humans and reefs by considering the <\/span><b>surrounding population size<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>travel time to the reef<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Cinner, 2018).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Combining management effort, context and conservation gains for coral reefs\u00a0<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020 a team of scientists lead by Joshua Cinner from the ARC Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies in Australia published a paper in Science magazine aimed at describing under <\/span><b>which context<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in terms of <\/span><b>human pressure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>management efforts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><b>coral reefs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around the world <\/span><b>reached multiple<\/b> <b>conservation goals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This gave an idea of which coral reefs have the best conservation achievements, and why. To do so, they assessed the conditions of <\/span><b>1,800 tropical coral reefs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>40 countries and territories<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for <\/span><b>conservation goals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they considered three parameters: the <\/span><b>fishable biomass in the reef<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fish over 20 cm long), the <\/span><b>scraping potential of parrotfish<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the more parrot fish scrap, the less algae in the reef and therefore the easier corals can survive) and the <\/span><b>diversity of species\u2019 traits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (characteristics of species linked to community\u2019s processes: home range, diet and behaviour). The team sat reference conditions for such parameters with as well as \u201caspirational targets\u201d: <\/span><b>25%, 50%, 75% of the reference conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the higher the number, the more ambitious it is).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a first result, they found that only <\/span><b>5% of the analyzed reefs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> achieved the three considered <\/span><b>indicators simultaneously at 75% of the reference conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the most ambitious goal), and these are spread in the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans (Figure 1).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25841 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Capture-de\u0301cran-2021-02-26-a\u0300-13.50.21.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"804\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/app\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Capture-de\u0301cran-2021-02-26-a\u0300-13.50.21.png 1836w, https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/app\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Capture-de\u0301cran-2021-02-26-a\u0300-13.50.21-300x64.png 300w, https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/app\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Capture-de\u0301cran-2021-02-26-a\u0300-13.50.21-1024x219.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/app\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Capture-de\u0301cran-2021-02-26-a\u0300-13.50.21-768x164.png 768w, https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/app\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Capture-de\u0301cran-2021-02-26-a\u0300-13.50.21-1536x328.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 804px) 100vw, 804px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Figure 1<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Source: Cinner et al, 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next step in the analysis was to include the <\/span><b>management efforts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>context (<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in terms of <\/span><b>human pressure)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to describe the <\/span><b>probability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of meeting the three goals at the different ambitiousness levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cinner\u2019s team found that the areas with <\/span><b>no fishing regulation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cOpenly fished\u201d, Figure 2) had very high probability to accomplish the <\/span><b>lower standards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the three conservation goals (light pink line: 25 and 50% of reference conditions, Figure 2A). In more, they had <\/span><b>low probabilities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of achieving results close to the <\/span><b>reference conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in both low and high human pressure scenarios (purple line: 75% of reference conditions, Figure 2A).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In parallel, the <\/span><b>Marine Protected Areas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(MPAs) had a high likeliness to accomplish all goals at the <\/span><b>most ambitious level<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (purple line: 75% of reference conditions, Figure 2E). The <\/span><b>restricted fishing areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> follow the same trends but with lower probabilities compared to the MPAs (Figure 2I). Furthermore, the likeliness of achieving the different goals in these areas decreased more rapidly in \u201c<\/span><b>high human pressure contexts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d compared to the MPAs (Figure 2E, 2I), suggesting that the <\/span><b>context is an important<\/b> <b>factor for the local management outcomes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, according to this analysis, the potential conservation gains will depend on the seascape context as well as in the ambitiousness of the goal. <\/span><b>Less-pressure reefs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have <\/span><b>better probabilities of achieving conservation gains<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared to the ones under high human pressure in the seascape, therefore where efforts should be placed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25843 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Capture-de\u0301cran-2021-02-26-a\u0300-13.50.34.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"283\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/app\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Capture-de\u0301cran-2021-02-26-a\u0300-13.50.34.png 762w, https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/app\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Capture-de\u0301cran-2021-02-26-a\u0300-13.50.34-188x300.png 188w, https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/app\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Capture-de\u0301cran-2021-02-26-a\u0300-13.50.34-642x1024.png 642w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Figure 2<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> \u201cEstimated probability of reef sites having 25, 50, 75% of reference conditions [&#8230;] for the combination of fisheries sustain (biomass of fish &gt;20 cm), parrotfish scraping potential and trait diversity\u201d (light, dark pink and purple, respectively). <\/span><b>A<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for openly fished areas (no restrictions), <\/span><b>E<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Marine Protected Areas and <\/span><b>I<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for restricted fishing. Source: Cinner et al, 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, <\/span><b>the prioritization of coral reefs\u2019 conservation is a highly debated topic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in marine sciences, since there are different positions. For instance, the team of Jill Harris of WWF and National Geographic Society proposed in their 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/aqc.2810\">paper<\/a> that <\/span><b>coral reefs that were more intensely threatened by humans<\/b> <b>on a local scale should be<\/b> <b>prioritized for conservation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Therefore those under high human pressure contexts, where the pressure can actually be managed (Harris et al, 2017).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In conclusion, Cinner\u2019s team research contributes in giving <\/span><b>a large scale overview of the gains of coral reef conservation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> considering multiple goals, both biological and socio-economic. Also, management measures and human pressure are important factors for the achievement of the goals under different levels of ambition. Still, each context should be considered individually to make decisions and prioritize areas, including the habitat structure of the surrounding seascape (Grober-Dunsmore et al, 2007; Weeks, 2017) and <\/span><b>the level of dependency of local communities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> towards coral reefs (Harris et al, 2017).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:
