This diversity provides benefits for human communities around the world. Around <\/span><b>330 million people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> live within 30 km of coral reefs [1], receiving direct benefits like fisheries and tourism-related jobs, food resources, coastal protection and cultural value [2].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In parallel, the less known <\/span><b>cold-water coral ecosystems <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are distributed around the world\u2019s ocean and have an important role in nutrient cycles, as well as biodiversity support, including human communities (Cordes et al, 2016). They provide habitat for marine organisms, support fisheries and diving tourism for the most shallow ones [3].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, coral ecosystems worldwide have faced <\/span><b>rapid degradation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since the 20th century [4]. Globally, <\/span><b>coral reefs are one of the most affected marine ecosystems facing global warming<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even in the most optimistic scenarios [5]. Ocean acidification, ocean warming, sea level rise and changes in storms and precipitation threaten coral communities by generating thermal stress, increasing sedimentation, and reducing pH levels, amongst other processes\u00a0 [5,6]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the local and regional scale, <\/span><b>destructive fishing, pollution, coastal development and mineral extraction are common drivers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that increase the vulnerability of coral bottoms to global pressures [4].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has become clear that <\/span><b>social and environmental systems are interconnected<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Human activities have an effect (either positive or negative) on the structure and function of ecosystems, which at the same time result in a different supply of ecosystem services to humans [7,8].<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What is coral restoration?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coral restoration consists in <\/span><b>assisting the recovery of the reef\u2019s structure or functionality that has been degraded or destroyed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that will impact the value and <\/span><b>services provided by the ecosystem<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [9, 10]. This strategy has been increasingly recognized as <\/span><b>a useful tool to counter ecosystem degradation and accelerate their recovery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after strong impacts [9].\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, coral restoration is not a one size fit all solution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the main pressures of coral reefs occur on a local or regional scale, coral restoration can be part of a management strategy addressed to strengthen the <\/span><b>resilience of the ecosystem<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but <\/span><b>it isn\u2019t a solution on its own<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [12].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the goal of coral restoration is not to return to a historical baseline of ecosystem condition, but <\/span><b>to contribute to the recovery of some key processes and services<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [9]. In fact, the elimination in the short term of some global threats is virtually impossible, considering that ocean temperatures and pH will take decades to stabilize [11].\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The social dimension of a restoration or conservation strategy is equally important<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The support of local actors can be decisive for achieving ecosystem recovery in the long term. <\/span><b>The involvement of local communities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the different stages of the project is a way to empower them in the ecosystem stewardship, and hence contribute to <\/span><b>the projects\u2019 sustainability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [13].<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Where and how is coral restoration occuring?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the review published in 2020 by Lisa Bostrom-Einarsson and collaborators, <\/span><b>coral restoration in tropical reefs is currently developed in at least 56 countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around the world, 40% of which occur in the USA, Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand (Fig. 1).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% of the reported projects report a short duration (median of 12 months), and cover on average 100m2, showing a trend for short term and small-scale projects. Why? Some of the reasons concern the technical difficulties in accessing the areas, related high-costs and the limited knowledge on these ecosystems [3]. However, amongst existing initiatives, in the Mediterranean for example, the gorgonian coral transplantation on artificial structures has provided valuable information about restoration techniques in this environment (you can learn more via the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.merces-project.eu\/?q=content\/ecological-restoration-cold-water-coral-populations%C2%A0\"><b>Merces project<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What is the UN Decade on Ecological Restoration?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, the UN has launched the UN Decade on Ecological Restoration from 2021 to 2031 as <\/span><b>a call<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for governments, enterprises, NGOs, scientists and all citizens <\/span><b>to take action for ecosystem recovery across the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This decade seeks to advance in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals linked to biodiversity conservation, improving livelihoods, ensuring food security and combating climate change, through ecosystem restoration. You can find out more about the decade <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.decadeonrestoration.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Coral Guardian we see <\/span><b>coral restoration as a means to involve local communities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in coral conservation and raise awareness on the importance of corals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, we accompany three projects around the world in very different contexts, through our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/en\/our-actions\/bluecenter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programme. The pilot project occurs in the heart of the Coral Triangle <\/span><b>in Indonesia, around <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/en\/indonesia\/\"><b>Hatamin Island<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and aims <\/span><b>to restore tropical corals from blast fishing hand in hand with the local community<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The second project takes place along the <\/span><b>Mediterranean coasts of Spain, in La Herradura<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where we accompany the NGO Equilibrio Marino in <\/span><b>cold-water coral repopulation and seabottom recovery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/en\/spain\/\"><b>SOS Corales project<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Finally, the third project occurs on <\/span><b>the island of <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/en\/our-actions\/bluecenter\/#section-4\"><b>Martinique<\/b> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where we give advice to two local NGOs, Roots of the Sea and Guardians of the Earth, in <\/span><b>the conception of their coral restoration project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that aims to protect coral ecosystems by involving local actors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can be part of the solution too:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce your <strong>carbon footprint<\/strong>: choose to cycle or public transport over a car.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce your <strong>fish consumption<\/strong>, and choose small scale and artisanal fisheries when buying fish, if possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce your <strong>plastic consumption<\/strong> in your everyday groceries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When visiting coral reefs, choose <strong>tourism initiatives that reduce their negative impacts<\/strong> on ecosystems and support local communities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help <strong>raise awareness<\/strong> and <strong>stay informed<\/strong> on initiatives around coral reefs in your area and worldwide!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also support our coral restoration projects directly by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/en\/adopt-a-coral\/\">adopting a coral<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coralguardian.org\/en\/support-us-individuals\/\">donating monthly<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more information:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[1] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Resources Institute (2020) Coral reefs, status and outlook of coral reefs around the world.
