Main Responsibilities

As part of its coral restoration project in Indonesia, the Waka Eling Semeton Foundation is recruiting a Scientific & Administrative Project Manager to supervise and develop the science protocols and data collection, and to support the local manager in administrative and financial tasks. This mission is carried out in partnership with the NGO Coral Guardian, which provides technical and scientific expertise.

The Scientific & Administrative Project Manager will have the following main responsibilities:

1. Training and Supervision of the Local Team (25%)

  • Train the local team in reef ecological monitoring techniques and coral restoration methods recommended by Coral Guardian.
  • Design and lead training sessions on coral identification, monitoring coral growth and health, and assessing marine biodiversity.
  • Supervise and ensure the team correctly performs reef monitoring
  • Ensure skills transfer to the rest of the local team in data collection and scientific analysis.

2. Monitoring of Restored Reefs (20%)

  • Implement and oversee reef ecological monitoring protocols for restored coral reefs.
  • Collect and report accurate scientific data to evaluate the effectiveness of restoration actions for further analysis by Coral Guardian.
  • Produce regular reports on reef evolution and propose adjustments to employed techniques if necessary to Coral Guardian.

3. Development and Coordination of Scientific Initiatives (15%)

  • Propose scientific initiatives related to coral restoration and marine conservation in consultation with Coral Guardian.
  • Develop innovative research protocols in collaboration with Coral Guardian to enhance knowledge on coral reefs and their resilience to climate change.

4. Development of Scientific Partnerships (15%)

  • Identify and establish collaborations with research institutions and relevant scientific partners locally and internationally.
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange and encourage synergies between Waka Eling Semeton Foundation and other scientific and environmental stakeholders in Indonesia.

5. Reporting and Scientific Communication (15%)

  • Ensure regular data and events reporting to the scientific team at Coral Guardian.
  • Participate in writing articles, reports, and scientific communication materials about the project’s progress.
  • Contribute to raising awareness among local communities and stakeholders about the importance of coral reef restoration.

6. Administrative reporting and budget management (10%)

  • Prepare general weekly reports on project activities and progress about the different subjects of the restoration project
  • Prepare monthly budgets and track invoices, bills and payments linked to the coral restoration project.
  • Ensure financial and data reports and records are accurate and up-to-date.
  • Process payroll for local staff and ensure timely salary payments.
  • Assist in communication between the foundation, Coral Guardian, and other stakeholders.

Required Profile

Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree in marine biology, ecology, marine ecosystem conservation, or a related field (minimum Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred, or if not any degree 2-3 years experience in reef monitoring and data collection).
  • Experience in coral reef monitoring and ecological restoration techniques.
  • Experience of underwater ecological monitoring methods (e.g., benthic surveys, fish monitoring, coral growth, photo quadrats, etc.).
  • Experience in training and supervising local teams is a plus.
  • Experience in using Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets and Google Drive 
  • Experience in collecting data and logging it.
  • Skills in partnership development and scientific project management.
  • Ability to work long hours on the field and to freedive to 5m.
  • SCUBA certification is a plus.
  • Experience in financial reporting, budgeting, and payroll management is a plus.
  • Ability to analyse, and interpret scientific data is a plus.

Languages

  • Proficiency in Indonesian and English is essential.
